On March 28, 2019 I had the honor of singing the national anthem for the MN Twins home opener vs Cleveland. The team made me this official MLB jersey with Har Mar on the back along with the number 99 which was the year I started making records as Har Mar Superstar. It was a nerve wracking, nationally televised challenge. Off camera in front of me was a nice man on a walkie talkie giving me hand signals to speed up and slow down so I could time the ending of the song to two F-16 fighter jets flying overhead. The echo in a baseball stadium is insane, and I could hear the words coming out of my mouth at the same time as the ones bouncing back at me on 2 second delay. Not to mention that the lyrics to “The Star Spangled Banner” are difficult to remember non-speak I’d been singing wrong my whole life, and the melody historically takes a huge vocal range to do justice. Somehow I nailed it, and the Twins went on to win 2-0. It was an amazing day. I wore this jersey all day as my good luck charm. You couldn’t see it on TV, but I was wearing it under the very USA shawl I chose for the performance. My mom was down on the field with me, so the day was even more special. 5 years earlier I took her to see Paul McCartney perform at the same venue, probably on the very same grass. America!
