This drawing eventually landed on my book cover, The Tigers They Let Me. It isn’t the final illustration, but one variant I made while working it out. I retraced the image, scanned the line work, colored it, then photocopied and enlarged it onto thin colored paper I’d salvaged from the Portland city dump during a six-month Glean residency. I’d come away with stacks of that paper—stuff I really dig. While preparing pieces for the residency show, I ran this tiger image onto one sheet and typed a poem over it. I’m not sure the poem exists anywhere else. Its lines circle back to the book’s themes—very memory based, very love based.
